UNESCO to train Bloggers, Content-creators, Journalists on Media and Information Literacy

Image
Media and information literacy are not only critical for information dissemination, informed society but also for peaceful co-existence in order to build democratic ethos and also enjoying the dividends of democracy. A recent survey on Google by Lynn and Becker put Nigeria at 67.76 percent ahead of Cameroon, Somalia, Morocco, Sao Tome and Principe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Belize, Mauritius, Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Guatemala, Cape Verde, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nicaragua and Nepal. Nepal was at the lowest rung of the ladder in terms of intelligence quotient (I.Q). Leveraging on the Intelligence Quotient (I.Q) of Nigerians as it relates to using the social media for information literacy, UNESCO has said it would soon train bloggers, social media influences, content-creators in order to help them to do their jobs on the Internet for a more informed society. This idea was mooted at the Global Media Literacy and Information Conference organised by UNESCO...

Making the Most of Time

Image
Time is one of the greatest resources given to man. Our existence here on earth is regulated by time. No wonder the psalmist said, “So teach us to number days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Ps 90:12) Time is also one of the most valuable resources that we have. Your success or failure is determined by how well you maximize your time. What you do with your time is what you will get. If you use your time for a profitable venture, it will yield interest in quantifiable terms. If on the other way you invest your time in unprofitable venture, you will also get the reward. You can’t cheat time. You will be the greatest fool ever if you think you can fritter your time and then get profitable result. The Bible says, “God is not mocked, whatsoever a man soweth, so shall he reap.” (Gal 6:7), And do you know what amazes me about “time”.   God has given the same amount of time to everybody whether you are rich or poor; wise or foolish; prudent or wasteful, literate or...

Want to live in Europe? Make sure you are not guilty of these!

Image
If you are a Naija and you have been dreaming of coming to Europe, you need to start imbibing cultures if you are to last here or else, you might soon find yourself back to Naija. All these are based on what I have seen here and not what I have read in a book or what I was told by a European or someone living here:   1. Traffic Rules: in Europe, traffic Rules are respected. Vehicles stop for you when the light is on 'green' or when you are on Zebra-crossing even when the vehicles are passed by the light. If you want a vehicle to stop for you, you need to be on the Zebra Crossing. Better still, you press a button to FasTrack your waiting for vehicles to pass. In Naija, don't try that or else the vehicle will crush you. In Europe, they have respect for pedestrians and drivers can apply a brake (even when they are on speed) to allow you to cross.   2 . Noise: If you are living in a room with another person, maybe a hostel, please use an ear phone or i-pod so t...

Can you Pay the Price? (Part 2)

Image
This part is the conclusion of my previous post on this subject. Please read, like and share your comment. 6. Love Money: If you don’t like money, it is doubtful if you will be rich. Please don’t quote me, Jesus said this, “And I say unto you, make to yourselves friends of the Mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye fall, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.” (Luke 16:9). You can see how important this subject is that our Lord and Master talked about this to his disciples. This is because, “Money answered all things.” A word of caution here. Don’t because of this love money to the detriment of your soul. It doesn’t also means that you can do anything to make money. There are both legitimate and illegitimate ways to make money as we all know. We are talking about the legitimate way here. Please don’t get me wrong. 7. Don’t Envy or Hate Rich People : I am sure you want to be rich. If you really want to, don’t hate rich people. Don’t envy them. Don’t have the noti...

Can you Pay the Price (Part 1)

Image
Many young people want to be rich and enjoy those who are rich and are making it. But the fact is that many cannot pay the price. To be a successful rich person, there is a price to pay. I mean if you want to make real wealth and rain wealthy. Here are just some of them: 1. Hardwork: We are living in a society where hardwork to many doesn't pay. They tell you that hardwork doesn't pay and many young people want quick riches. Even in the western world, it is now shifting from hardwork to smart word. Whether it is 'hardwork' or 'smartwork' each of them still have the headword 'work.' It means you still have to work if you want to be rich and successful. Lazy people can't rich. If they become rich, they cannot sustain it as it would soon vanish away. I heard Adekinle Gold in one of his songs saying, "Dangote o Lori meji." Na lie. Dangote has ten heads. None of us could even match in the shoes of those rich men. Prof. Pat Utomi many ye...

So you really want to “JAPA?”

Image
The Japa syndrome has been in vogue or has been trending for some time. It is even more now that inflation is biting harder, Naira is weaker, and Dollar is a super-hero. But the question is: “why are people moving out of the country in droves? Where are they moving to? Is there any consequence(s) for moving out? Many Nigerians want to “Japa” because of the present economic hardship. They just want to leave the country to anywhere as far as it is not “Naija”. It could be Ghana, Togo, Morocco, Canada, Yankee or anywhere. According to many of them who want to “Japa”. They want to be free from the manacle and the clutches of the woes bedeviling them in Nigeria. The term “Japa” meaning to be free, run away, or migrate or escape from a present reality or problem was first popularized in 2020 after Naira Marley, a Nigerian singer released his singles titled “Japa”. Many Naija just want to “Japa” not considering the harsh realities outside the shores of the country. Everyday many...

How to celebrate the World English Language Day

Image
Today, 23rd April, 2024 is celebrated as the World English Language Day. It coincides with Williams Shakespeare’s birthday (the Bard and Avon of literature) and the World Book and Copyright Day. I am sure many people are not aware of this important day. This day is very significant in the UN’s calendar because English Language is one of the two working languages (the other is French) of the UN secretariat and one of the organization’s six official languages.  Why is this day important? English Language is spoken in over eighty-eight (88) countries of the world. In Africa, twenty-four (24) countries use the English Language as their official Language.  English is often referred to as a “World Language” or the lingua franca (bridge language or common language used by speakers of different languages) of the modern era because it is widely spoken. Since Nigeria is an English-speaking country, celebrating this auspicious even is very important.  The UN first celebrated ...
